She became famous after responding to an interviewer in a TV street interview when asked about the female-only cars on Japanese trains, saying "I don’t really care where I am on the train." The video quickly went viral. The Skilled Thatchers of Shirakawa-go? In this article we introduce the following video: "Door to Tomorrow by At Home Series '#019 Thatcher Eizaku Tanaka'" (明日への扉 by アットホームシリーズ「#019 茅葺職人 田中 栄作」). The video introduces 26 year-old thatcher Eizaku Tanaka from 2:55. The young thatcher was born and raised in Shirakawa-go, Gifu, in the Tokai region (東海地方) of Japan. Shirakawa-go, a registered World Heritage Site, is situated in an area that experiences heavy snowfall each year. The characteristic Gassho-zukuri-style houses are built to withstand the harsh weather conditions, however, constructing the thatched roofing is not only hard physically but also requires a vast amount of knowledge and skill. More About Shirakawa-go, a World Heritage Site in Gifu Prefecture Photo:Shirakawa-go in winter, Gifu Prefecture The unspoiled landscape of the Japanese villages Shirakawa-go in Gifu prefecture and Gokayama (五箇山) in Toyama prefecture (富山県, toyamaken) is hard to find anywhere else in Japan. Both of these historic villages were registered as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1995. As mentioned previously, Shirakawa-go is located in Gifu prefecture. This area receives some of the heaviest snowfall in Japan and around 100 gassho-zukuri houses of varying sizes have been built in this remote area of the country. You can see the snow-covered gassho-zukuri houses from 1:47 in the video. Gasshozukuri Minkaen (合掌造り民家園), an open-air museum located in Ogimachi (荻町) lies along the Sho river (庄川, shougawa) and was registered as an Important Cultural Asset in 1976. Shirakawa-go used to be rarely visited by outsiders, especially during the winter months, however, as the beauty of the landscape became well known through the media and internet, the number of tourists dramatically increased and Shirakawa-go is now one of the top sightseeing spots in Japan. The village is often lit up at night and the snow-covered gassho-zukuri houses look like something out of a fairytale. More About the Thatchers of Shirakawa-go Photo:A thatched roof The sericulture (silk farming) industry was very important to the Shirakawa-go region. You can see the attics where the silk worms were kept from 1:48 in the video. The typical shape of the thatched roofs is called "Kirizuma" (切妻) and the main materials used to make the roofs are Chinese silver grass (ススキ, Miscanthus sinensis) and Kariyasu (刈安, Miscanthus tinctorius), both of which are water-resistant and breathable. The roofs are generally replaced every 30-40 years, with small repairs being made along the way. The layout of the houses within the village and even the angle of the roofs have all been carefully designed taking into consideration the fact that they must be able to withstand the strong winds and heavy snowfall of that region. The smoke which rises from the sunken fireplace (irori, 囲炉裏) helps to prevent pests and degradation of the roof and improves the overall durability. The thatchers use techniques like these to ensure the roofs are strong enough to withstand the rain and wind. Reroofing the Houses of Shirakawa-go Photo:Re-thatching by a thatching craftsman Gassho-zukuri houses have been built in Japan since the Edo period (1603 AD-1868 AD). Built without the use of nails, the houses are split into two areas: the first floor living space and the attic space used for silk-farming. Windows can be built into the roof and the spacious design of the Kirizumazukuri (切妻造り) roofs create the ideal conditions for silk farming during the harsh winter months. The roofs are supported by pillars that are cut at a particular angle, lodged in place, and then tied securely. No nails are used to hold the pillars in place. In this way, the frame of the roof is strong yet flexible enough to withstand earthquakes. The above are all great examples of the high level of skill involved in Japanese engineering and construction. The design and functionality of the thatched roofing is one of the highlights of the houses in Shirakawa-go. The roofs are highly durable, however, being made from natural materials, they do require reroofing every 30-40 years. Reed screens called "sudare" are first laid down as a base, after which bundles of miscanthus reed, cut to around 80cm in length, are piled on making sure to leave no gaps. The most difficult part of the reroofing process is perfecting the edge of the roof, as this affects not only the final look of the roof but also the durability. Reroofing is a huge project which with the combined effort of the local thatchers takes on average 2 months to complete and costs approximately 20 million yen. Murakami Kibori Lacquerware - A Traditional Craft of Niigata Prefecture This video, titled "手技TEWAZA「村上木彫堆朱」Murakami Kibori Lacquerware/伝統工芸 青山スクエア Japan traditional crafts Aoyama Square," was released by "Traditional Crafts Aoyama Square." Murakami Kibori Lacquerware (Murakami Kibori Tsuishu), introduced in the video, is a general term for six types of carving, including tsuishu, tsuikoku, and shumarinuri, and it is a traditional craft of the Murakami region of Niigata Prefecture, which has been widely known as a natural lacquer production area since the Heian period (794-1185). Murakami Kibori Lacquerware was introduced by a lacquer maker in Kyoto at the beginning of the 15th century as a technique for painting lacquer on wood carvings. This was done in imitation of Chinese tsuishu (lacquerware), and the technique was introduced to the Murakami region after a temple was built there. The technique was first learned by the carpenters who built the temple, after which it was was passed on to samurai duringEdo period (1603-1868), then to the townspeople, and finally to present day Japan. In this article, we'll go over Murakami Kibori Lacquerware, a traditional lacquer technique of Niigata prefecture. The Process of Making Murakami Kibori Lacquerware Source :YouTube screenshot Along with the video, we'll be introducing some of the steps in the 18 to 20 step process that craftsmen use to make Murakami Kibori Lacquerware by hand. 1. Sketching (0:40~) This serves as a guide for engraving and is drawn directly on the wooden plate. Drawing with a brush that can express stronger and weaker lines is fundamental to the process. 2. Carving (0:47~) Wood carving is performed by using a chisel called an "Urajiro" on the sketch drawn in step 1. There are two types of carvings, the two-dimensional Shishiai-bori and three-dimensional Hikisage-bori. In the video, the craftsman explains that the most important thing is to carve the wood as though it were a living thing, making the most of the different grains of each tree. 3. Sanding (1:18~) This is the process of sanding the roughness of the blade marks with sandpaper (in the old days, horsetail was used) to give roundness and softness to the carving. This makes the work even more three-dimensional. 4. Hardening This involves adding a small amount of red husks to raw lacquer and using a brush to soak the entire wood with lacquer. This is also an important step because it is done to solidify the foundation of making a durable Tsuishu. Source :YouTube screenshot 5. Smoothing (1:29) In the important undercoating process to make durable lacquerware, raw lacquer and polishing powder are mixed and applied 2-3 times to the plain areas without engravings. 6. Polishing The process of water-polishing the coated surface using an imperial whetstone. This is done with applying rust lacquer and is repeated 2-3 times and the lacquerware is allowed to dry for at least a few days after the rust lacquering process. 7. Middle Coating (1:40~) The process of dabbing on lacquer on with a pad or fingertip and then finishing painting with a brush so that the engraved pattern is not filled with lacquer. Generally, oil-free refined lacquer is used for this. 8. Polishing the Middle Coating It is a process of carefully water-sanding the surface with a fine-grained natural stone whetstone called Murakami whetstone or a water file. 9. Top Coating (2:06~) Brightly colored vermilion lacquer is dabbed on with a pad or fingertip and finished painting using a brush so as not to fill the carved patterns similar to the intermediate coat. Matt Finishing (2:23~) An important process for polishing the top-coated glossy surface with charcoal or polishing powder evenly with water to make it a deep and calm-looking product. 11. Engraving (2:44~) The designs are carved once more. This fine carving is made to supplement the earlier wood carving with a fine-pointed triangular chisel. Expressions such as leaf veins, feathers, and mountain surfaces are re-engraved. 12. Finishing (3:06~) This step involves adding a small amount of red iron oxide to high-quality raw lacquer and rubbing it with a brush over the entire vessel. The matte surface is moist and firm, and this completes the production process of Murakami Kibori Tsuishu. The beautiful, finished product, like a work of art, can be seen from 3:23 in the video. In this article, we'll go over how Japan's Tombodama are made and how the Tombodama found in Kyoto's Byodoin Temple have been restored, alongside the video. Restoring the National Treasures of Kyoto's Byodoin Temple Source :YouTube screenshot The glass beads found in the base of the wooden Amitabha statue found in Byodoin Temple's Hoodo hall (鳳凰堂) were part of a decoration called a "Yoraku" (瓔珞) that used to hang in the area surrounding the Buddha statue. They are thought to have been made in the same workshop as the items stored in Shosoin (正倉院), athe treasure house of Todaiji Temple in Nara. The beads of the Yoraku decoration mentioned above were restored by Osaka craftswomen Yuriko Matsuda (松田有利子). You can take a look at the restored glass beads at 1:32 in the video. The glass stored in the Sangetsu Kobo Workshop (山月工房) were found to be similar in composition to the glass glass beads from Kyoto, which have been designated national treasures, and was therefore used in the restoration project. The Mino Handmade Paper Co-operative (美濃和紙協同組合) and Mino Washi Preservation Society (美濃和紙保存会) have successfully preserved the traditional Japanese craft of Mino Washi throughout the years. Together with Sekishu-banshi (石州半紙) and Hosokawashi (細川紙), Mino Washi (Honminoshi) was registered as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in Japan in 2014. How Mino Washi is Made Source :YouTube screenshot As you can see from 0:08 in the video, Mino Washi is made from the highest quality mulberry called kouzo (楮), a special breed specifically used for making Mino Washi, using traditional Japanese techniques. The first step to making Mino Washi involves soaking the paper mulberry overnight in water and washing away any impurities in a process called "Mizusarashi" (水晒し). The paper mulberry may also then be removed from the water and laid out on the ground, being exposed to the sunlight in a process called "Agesarashi" (あげ晒し). From 5:56 in the video, you can see the mulberry plant material being boiled in a process called "Shajuku" (煮熟) after which the material is pounded. Traditionally, potassium bicarbonate extracted from wood ash was used during the boiling process. However these days, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydroxide are commonly used, depending on the type of material being used. The fibrous material is then poured into a vessel called a "Sukifune" which the craftsmen can then use to create the Mino Washi paper. The fibers can be easily broken down due to removal of dirt and impurities in the previous steps. As there are many important steps and rules to follow in order to make Mino Washi, it is essential that all of the craftsmen are highly skilled. There are currently only five craftsmen, members of the Mino Washi Preservation Society, who are able to make Mino Washi using traditional techniques. The garments wore by the upper classes were made by dyeing and weaving artisans. For this reason, dye artisans at that time held a high position in Japan's hierarchical society. These formal court dresses, such as Sokutai and Junihitoe, can only be handmade since the delicate weaving cannot be done by machines. Automated weaving machines were imported to Japan during the Meiji period (1868-1912) and silk textiles were designated as a main industry. Both ironware from Mizusawa, Iwate Prefecture and ironware from Morioka, Iwate Prefecture in Japan's Tohoku region are called Nanbu Tekki ironware. Each has its own history. What we call ‘Nanbu Tekki ironware’ nowadays, is actually the name used in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. It is said that ironware started around the time Lord Nanbu of Morioka built Morioka Castle in the Keicho Period (around 1600). There are many Nanbu Tekki ironware products such as pots, cauldrons, wind chimes, candle stick holders, tea kettles, frying pans and kettles. The most famous ones are iron tea kettles used in tea ceremony. It is said that these iron kettles originated when the 28th lord of the Nanbu domain, Shigenao Nanbu , invited Nizaemon Kiyotaka Koizumi of Kyoto to make a chagama with high quality iron. Supplementing iron helps in recovery from stiff shoulders, and, as you probably guessed, prevents iron deficiencies. One benefit of boiling tap water in Nanbu Tekki ironware is that most of the chlorine is removed in the process. During World War II, development of arms was given the highest priority and Nanbu Tekki ironware faced a crisis as the production became prohibited in Iwate Prefecture. After the war, it made a comeback, and it was given the status of a "National Traditional Craft" in 1975. The video is an interview where she speaks about how she encountered the traditional art and craft Tokiwa Kongatazome (常盤紺型染), as well as its origin and traditions. The Traditional Japanese Art and Craft "Tokiwa Kongatazome" Source :YouTube screenshot Tokiwa Kongatazome is a technique of stencil dyeing born in the late Edo period (1750 ~1850), and developed in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. At that time, Tohoku did not have Kasuri-weaving (a textile technique in which patterns were woven using thread dyed in different colors), so people came up with the idea of creating a paper stencil based on the design patterns of Kasuri instead. It initially only used deep blue colors for dyeing so it was named "Tokiwa 'Kon' gata" (Kon 紺, meaning "navy blue" in Japanese), but now it uses multiple colors so people sometimes call it somply "Tokiwagata" (without the kanji for navy blue). After World War II, Japanese fashion changed from Wafuku (Japanese-style) to Yofuku (Western-style), causing the Tokiwa Kongatazome technique to lose popularity. However, the dye shop "Natoriya Dyeing Factory" (名取屋染工場) uses Tokiwa Kongatazome in products like "Tenugui" (Hand towels), "Noren" (traditional Japanese fabric dividers hung on/between walls), flags, curtains, banners, "Hanten" (short, Japanese-style winter coats), and other small items. The starched area is going to be left white after the fabric is dyed, forming a pattern on the cloth. An example of this stencil dyeing is shown in the video around 1:49. A technique called "Itoire" (Inserting threads into a paper-stencil) is used to create a paper-stencil. This technique allows for the design of more intricate patterns. In the future, the X-2 is expected to be commercialized around 2030, and is envisioned as the next fighter aircraft of the F2, which belongs to the older generation of aircraft.
